GL class locomotive

The GL class are a class of diesel locomotives rebuilt from life-expired 442 class locomotives by A Goninan & Co, Broadmeadow for Chicago Freight Car Leasing Australia in 2003/04.
==History==
The 12 original locomotives were forwarded to UGL's Broadmeadow plant where they were completely stripped to the bare chassis and re-manufactured from the ground upwards, virtually the only equipment retained being the bogies and main frames with internal fuel tanks. The original 12-cylinder Alco 251C engines and AEI main generators were discarded, replaced with imported fully overhauled GE 7FDL-12 3,300hp (gross) diesel engines and associated alternators. In this form the GL-class's traction output became 3,000hp (2,237kW). All-new cabs (with desk-top controls and improved collision protection) and car bodies that retained a dual-cab configuration were provided while GE Bright Star microprocessor control systems were also employed, increasing the traction output by one third (231kN to 347kN continuous). Although the class-leader's handover took place in January 2003, extensive trials on the NSW main northern line did not start for several more weeks. All 12 had been delivered by October 22 2004 in a programme reported to have cost $30 million for their manufacture and ongoing maintenance. All except for GL108 have silenced engines.
